Outlet not working or has no power

A dead outlet is usually a tripped GFCI upstream or a loose backstab connection — a licensed electrician can trace it in under an hour.

What is usually
behind it.

The shortlist of root causes we find on this call. The truck is stocked for most of these.

  1. 01GFCI outlet tripped upstream (often in the bathroom or garage)
  2. 02Backstab wire connection failed at the outlet
  3. 03Tripped breaker
  4. 04Loose neutral in the junction box
  5. 05Failed outlet (worn contacts)
  6. 06Wiring stapled or nicked during a previous remodel
02 / 04Right now

Do this while you wait.

Steps that can save product, prevent damage, and shorten the repair once we are on site.

Do this
  • Press the RESET button on any GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen, or garage
  • Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker
  • Test the outlet with a lamp — if the lamp works, the issue is with the device
Do not do this
  • Do not probe the outlet slots with anything metallic
  • Do not replace an outlet without shutting off the circuit breaker first
