Lights flickering or dimming

Occasional single-bulb flicker is usually a loose bulb. Whole-house or multi-room flicker is a sign of a wiring problem that needs attention now.

01 / 04Likely causes

What is usually
behind it.

The shortlist of root causes we find on this call. The truck is stocked for most of these.

  1. 01Loose neutral at the main panel or meter base
  2. 02Overloaded circuit causing voltage drop
  3. 03Loose connection at the fixture or switch
  4. 04Bulb not fully seated or wrong type for the dimmer
  5. 05Failing dimmer switch
  6. 06Utility-side voltage fluctuation

Do this while you wait.

Steps that can save product, prevent damage, and shorten the repair once we are on site.

Do this
  • Note whether the flicker is in one room or throughout the whole house
  • Check whether it happens when a large appliance (A/C, dryer) starts
  • If flickering is sudden and throughout the house, call your utility to rule out a service issue
Do not do this
  • Do not ignore whole-home flickering — a loose main neutral can damage appliances
  • Do not add more loads to a circuit that is already flickering
