UrgentDiagnostic guide
Home heat not working or blowing cold
In Florida the furnace rarely runs, so when it does fail it is usually a dirty filter, an igniter, or a heat strip — all fixable in one visit.
01 / 04Likely causes
What is usually
behind it.
The shortlist of root causes we find on this call. The truck is stocked for most of these.
- 01Dirty or clogged air filter blocking airflow
- 02Igniter or flame sensor dirty or failed
- 03Heat pump in defrost lockout
- 04Emergency heat relay or heat strip failed
- 05Gas valve or thermocouple out (gas furnace)
- 06Reversing valve stuck in cooling mode
02 / 04Right now
Do this while you wait.
Steps that can save product, prevent damage, and shorten the repair once we are on site.
Do this
- Replace the air filter — a clogged filter triggers high-limit shutoff
- Set thermostat to HEAT and check that the fan is running
- For heat pumps: check if the outdoor unit is iced over
Do not do this
- Do not turn on emergency heat for more than a short backup period — it is expensive
- Do not light a gas pilot without the manufacturer's instructions in hand
